The Book Was Better

black arts movement, harlem renaissance, imagination, knowledge is king, reading, shakespeare, the book was better

book vibes and other book-ish:

KNOWLEDGE IS KING!
Nah, knowledge is THE BOOK IS BETTER.

Is it me, or do the characters formed in your mind make the storyline better?

I mean, Hollywood is good but all my readers know, “in the book,” that scene didn’t happen like that.

Then again, imagination is better than knowledge
And I’m convinced ROMEO and JULIET is Black
Or Latino, cause white people don’t usually yell at the window like that.

In my mind, the balcony scene took place on a fire escape in Harlem
Or Chicago;
And the garden wall was the hallowed halls of the bustling Negro Quarters.

The Masquerade was J’Ouvert in celebration of the Great Migration
And the globalization of Congo Square.
Romeo was a struggling playwright and Juliet was a bourgeoisie’s daughter.

Picture it:
Juliet leans against the edge of the fire escape balcony, placing her hand neath her chin…

And Romeo O Romeo he’s smooth talking Juliet while brushing his 360 waves.
The brownstones dissipate in retrograde,
As the sun rises and he nears the highrise where the sidewalk ends.

O there’s a million things I could tell thee about the beauty of a book.

YOUR LIBRARY CARD IS A PASSPORT of sorts;
I merely went from Shakespeare to the Harlem Renaissance to the Black Arts Movement,
Just thinking about the beauty of a book.

My poems are not poems,
And I say that to say:
@scribesandvibes #BookSubscriptionBoxClubs are COMING SOON!
Until then GO TO THE LIBRARY
And TURN UP A BOOK. 🤓📚🤘

Cafe Terrace at Night

ballroom dance, coffeehouse in the evening, girl with a mandolin, in a sentimental mood, starry night

She walks in beauty, like the night.
Radiant as the Cafe Terrace at Night.
Sweeter than the sound of mandolins on starry nights.
I need you to be my Girl with a Mandolin, the way you pull heartstrings.
Silence is golden; yet you make my heart sing.
You make me wanna speak the languages of love,

like the songbirds sing.
Sweet Muse of mine,

I need you to love me,

love me, love me, if only for one night.
You could be my star eyes,

let me get lost in the magic in your eyes tonight.
This Love Jones got me in a sentimental mood,

let me be your Brother to the night.
I want to ballroom dance on the sidewalk tonight;

let your hands fade into my hands,

I wanna feel your heartbeat next to mine tonight.
I’m in a Sentimental Mood;

Sweet Muse, put on your dancing shoes

and meet me at the Cafe Terrace at Night.

#sideeyebae, Aunt Esther, black girl magic, black women's attitude, if looks could kill, side eye, watch out sucka

She’s nice and lovely…
but her side eye game is mean;
she’ll Aunt Esther you.

I admit, I love…
the infamous attitude
and side eye glances.

She sits quietly…
silently judging, speaking
with side eye sidebars.

That black girl magic
paired with that bold attitude;
nothing more to say.

Where’s #sideeyebae at?
Ms. communicate with looks,
I’m looking for you. 😉

I just wanna listen to Amy Winehouse
in a wine house,
swirl something light,
invocate the muse,
and write.
